The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 1884.
The telegraph line between Adelaide and Port Darwin is interrupted, so that we are for the present cut off from communication with places north of Australia. It is expected the line will be repaired to-day. The regular meeting of the Executive Committee of the Miners Association will meet at Dillman’s Town this evening, at 8 o’clock sharp. Ladies and gentlemen who are purposing to attend the Masonic Ball next Friday evening are reminded that a paragraph in the advertisement states that application for tickets must be made not later than the Bth instant, that is tomorrow. As this will be the first occasion that the Masonic fraternity have held a ball in Kumara, no doubt many will be inclined to go on this account; but of one thing we may rest assured —that no expense will be spared to make the ball and supper equal, if not superior, to anything of the kind ever held in Kumara. Those, therefore, who wish to secure tickets should apply at once. The funeral of the late James Gifford, particulars of whose murder on the Marsden and Maori Creek road on Saturday night are given in another part of this issue, will take place to-morrow afternoon, not on Thursday, as stated in a morning contemporary. The fourteenth competition for the Kumara Volunteer Company’s silver medal took place on Saturday. The weather being wet there were only two competitors, and Vol. Smith became the winner for the second time, with a very poor score, as follows: ’ Handi--200 400 500 cap. Tl. Vol. Smith 17 13 4 10 —44 Vol. Sampson 18 16 7 scr —4l Four miners at Maori Creek were arrested yesterday charged with assaulting a Chinaman. Their names are Jeremiah Noonan, Michael Daley, Peter Ward and W. Glashan. The Chinaman was taken into Greymouth on a dray. The County Council meets on Wednesday next for ordinary business. The Finance Committee meet the same day to revise the accounts for December. Tenders for the construction of the dray road from the branch Dillman’s Town road to the Special Settlement, Teremakau river, close at the County Council Chambers at 5 p.m. to-morrow (Tuesday). Tenders are required for the construction of a tunnel tail-race at Dunedin Flat, for Hobbs and party. Specifications are to be seen at Mr P. M'Grath’s, Dillman’s, or at Mr D. Hannan’s, Kumara, to either of which places tenders must be sent in before 7 p.m. on Monday next, 14th inst. Robin Hood’s Great Novelty Company’s consultation on the Dunedin Cup is now published. It is to be run for next month, so that early application for tickets is necessary. The shares are 10s each. 74 prizes are to be drawn.
