London, January 2. The Rev, Dr. Barry will retain his Canonship until he takes his departure for New South Wales. The Times anticipates a great future for the Anglican Church in Australia. It is believed that the authorities in Egypt are making arrangements with England for a prolonged occupation. A newspaper war is taking place between the Press of Berlin and Paris. Tenders are invited for the Victorian loan, to close the third week in January. The New Zealand 5 per cent, one million loan will be announced on Friday. [Per s.s. Tarawera, at the Bluff,] London, December 21. The Standard considers the Australian colonies are borrowing too largely, and condemns the floating of recent loans. Earl Derby has announced that the purchase of land by British subjects from natives in New Guinea will be disallowed. It has been suggested in financial circles that Victoria, in floating her proposed £4,000,000 loan, should place it in the hands of a syndicate, who would take it at a fixed rate, and float it on their own terms, at what they consider the most opportune moment. Wm, Hay, late member of the New South Wales Assembly, has a letter in this morning’s Times, in which he advocates adopting a system of Colonial Life Peerages. The latest advices from the Porte show that Turkey is unwilling to interfere for the suppression of the insurrection in Soudan. The French attack of Bacninh, which has been deferred for some time, is now imminent, as Admiral Courbet, Commander-in-chief of the French naval and military forces in Tonquin, is reported to be advancing rapidly with bis troops toward that place. From negotiations which have recently taken place, war between France and China is however now regarded 'as very improbable.
