Wellington, January 1. The Australia, with the December English mails, left San Francisco for Auckland on the 22nd ultimo, oue day later than time-table date. The Zealandia, with the December Colonial mails arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on the 30th ultimo, three days earlier than time table date. THAMES GOLD RETURNS. . Thames, December 31. The gold returns from the Thames goldrields for December amount to 7,689 ozs. 8 dwts. The largest yields are—New Prince Imperial, 3763 f ozs.; Dnep Level Cross, 559£ ozs.; Dark' 423 f ozs.; Thames Golden Crown, 345 f oz«.; Waitahi, 305 ozs.; Martha Extended (Waihi), 344£ ozs.; Caledouian, 203 f ozs.; Bright Smile, 122 oz-?. ; Caliban Claim, 270 ozs. The returns from Te Aroha lodged during the month at the local banks give a total of 2248 ozs. 7 dwts. CHRISTCHURCH NEW YEAR SUMMER MEETING. Christchuech, January 2. MIDDLE PARK STAKES. Three thousand people were present. The totalisator put through £4977. DTTNEDIN CALEDONIAN SPORTS. DrjNEpiN, Jauuary 2. There were heavy squalls of rain and wind all day, but the attendance at the Caledonian sports was several thousand. Donald Dinnie only contested in a few events, and only won putting the 16tt> stone, his throw being 44 feet 5 inches, or ten feet beyond any other. In danciug reels and Highland flings he was beaten by J. Murray jun., and only got third prize. The wrestling was postponed. January 2. There was again very bad weather for the Caledonian games, which were largely attended. There was a great deal of rain. The principal event today was border wrestling, in which Hudson, Tyson, and Robertson, the Maori, were among the principal competitors. Hudson won the champion belt with a good deal of ease, throwing Robertson, who took second prize. Tyson, who was thrown by Robertson, took third. Donald Dinnie won throwing the 228) ball and tossing the caber.
