> [united press association.] Wellington, June 7. Alfred de Bathe Brandon, of Wellington, has been called to the Legislative Council. A telegram from Riverton says that Harrington is willing to row Hearn providing Hearn will go to Riverton. It is understood that Hearn's supporters and backers demand that the race shall take place, and they will object to their man leaving Wellington. The Manawatu Railway Company to-day recived a cable from Sir Julius Vogel, announcing that their debentures to the amount of £200,000 have been taken up by a London syndicate. The debentures bear 5 per cent interest, but the directors refuse to state what price they have been disposed of at beyond the general statement that it is a satisfactory one. By the act they cannot sell at a price which will give the purchasers more than 6 per cent. The reserved 30,000 have also been taken in London on the same terms as the shares held in the Colony. The dii'ectors now intend to push on the line with the greatest possible rapidity. The new Commission of the Peace was issued in the supplementary Gazette to-day. A laborer named Thomas O'Keefe fell off the Queen's Wharf last night while iutoxicated, and was drowned. The body was discovered at midnight. An inquest will be held to-morrow. Oamaru, June 7. By a fire at Linden a deferred settler, named Brown, has lost a stable and five horses and harness. The insurance was about £IOO. Incendiarism is suspected.
