PROSPECTING ASSOCIATION.

In pursuance of a requisition signed by a number of respectable tradesmen to his Worship the Mayor (W. Barnett, Esq.), a public meeting was convened in the Town Hall last evening to " consider the advisability of forming a Prospecting Association to prospect between Kumara and the Sea Beach." There was a good attendance of business people and miners. His Worship read the requisition, and, after a few remarks, called upon some of the gentlemen who had signed the requisition to come forward and state their views on the subject of forming a prospecting association. Mr D. Han nan said he had much pleasure in.moving the first resolution, as follows : "That this meeting thinks it highly desirable to form a Prospecting Association for the purpose of assisting in a pecuniary way prospecting parties to prospect the country between Kumara and the Ocean Beach." Prom the fact of gold having been lately discovered at Rimu—so near to Kanieri and the other old workings, and remaining undiscovered for so long, it seemed not unlikely that, if efforts were made, gold would be found to exist between Kumara and the Sea Beach. Moreover, as the whole of the country between Boss and the Laraplough, including Stafford and the Scandinavian Terraces, had been proved to be auriferous, then, the finding of gold on the same line of the Teremakau, that is, at Candlelight and right through the Grey district, proves that gold mast exist on the flat between. He had therefore great pleasure in moving the resolution he had read. Mr H. Burger had much pleasure in seeonding the resolution. Business was awfully quiet in Kumara just now, and as he with others believed that gold existed in the flat between Lamplough, this town, and the Ocean Beach, there was nothing like trying for it. If the people would contribute two or three shillings a month for three or four months, he believed the money would be well spent. The resolution was then put and carried. Mr G. Rudkin said there were many persons of the opinion that between Kumara and Lamplough and Candlelight gold would be found to exist. The original motion had his support, and in furtherance of it he would move—" That the following gentlemen, namely, Messrs Home, Pearn, O'Hagan, Rudkin, Mnlvihill, Ziegler, Gilbert Stewart, Kirkpatrick, D. Hannan, H. Burger, John Davidson, R. J. Seddon, and his Worship the Mayor (with power to aid to their number) be appointed a Committee to carry out the object of the association,"

The motion was seconded by Mr L. J. Spyer, put to the meeting, and carried. The Major said he would like to hear an expression of opinion from some of those present. It wag often the case that committees were at a disadvantage in not having the advice of experienced men. Mr Burger said that as one of the Committee he should advocate giving the prospectors employed more liberty than had been allowed the actual prospectors for former associations of the kind in Kuraara; it had been the custom to trust too much to the Committee where their employes should go. Another thing he should purpose was that seven should form a quorum. He thought this would give more satisfaction to subscribers than the usual five. Mr Hannan would second that. He thought it would be a good plan to call a meeting of subscribers occasionally in tho Town Hall, and take their opinion on the course to be pursued. The motion that seven form a quorum was put and carried. The Mayor remarked that he heartily endorsed the resolutions which had been passed. This concluded the business of the meeting, and it was resolved that the Committee meet in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, at eight o'clock, to take steps to organise the association.
