[united press association.] "Wellington, May 9. The Huia arrived from Wanganni at one this afternoon. Her chief officer, Captain Alex. Murphy, was lost overboard during the passage. It appears that he was in charge of the deck after leaving Wanganni, and when about 20 miles from the port he was seen to fall overboard, and it is supposed that tho suction drow drew him underneath the vessel and he was struck by the propeller, as he was not seen afterwards. It is a mystery what caused him to fall overboard, but it is surmised that while standing beside the rail he fell and so went over the side. Murphy leaves a wife and four children residing at Wellington. An inquiry will be held. The flags in the town were lowered to half-mast in respect to his memory. Westport, May 9. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day an information for criminal libel by Charles Wright, proprietor of the Buller News, against John Tyrell, proprietor of the Evening Star, was heard. Defendant was committed for trial at the sittings of the Supreme Court, Nelson, in June next. The libel was alleged to be committed in an issue of the Star of April 21st, in an open column letter regarding the conduct of Wright in the capacity of borough valuer. Christchurch, May 9. Sir Mod red left for Sydney yesterday, consigued to his owner Mr Proudfoot. Ernest Webb, an apprentice on the Cairn Brig, fell from the main yard and struck the winch. He only lived a few minutes. At the inquest on the body a verdict of accidental death was returned. Timaru, May 9. A man named William Burrougb was found drowned in the water near the Washdyke. It is supposed that he missed his way in trying to take a short cut across a paddock.
