The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. TUESDAY, MAY 1, 1883.

The City of Sydney, with European and American mails via San Francisco, arrived at Auckland last night. The West Coast Railway Commissioners, Capt. W. R. Russell, Mr J. G. Wilson, M.H.R., Mr C. N. Bell, M.1.C.E., accompanied by C. Y. O’Connor, Middle Island Inspecting Engineer, and Mr J. Grey, Secretary to the Commission, returned from Hokitika last evening shortly after five o’clock, and proceeded to the Town Hall, where they took evidence relative to the East and West Coast Railway proposals. Particulars are given elsewhere. The Commissioners left by special tram at seven o’clock for Greymouth. They will take evidence there, and then proceed up the Arnold River to inspect one or more of the proposed routes for a railway. The Westland Railway League at Hokitika yesterday laid some very interesting statistical matter before the Commissioners for their knowledge and consideration, their deductions being that—“ln every respect the Arthur’s Pass route-is more economical in construction, cheaper as to maintenance, and more in the interest of both the people of the West Coast and Canterbury (particularly the southern or more thickly-populated part of Canterbury), to have the main trunk line cross the range as near as possible the middle of the island to Brumierton, and thence via Rceftou to Nelson.” The Auditors’ Report and the Borough Treasurer’s annual balance-sheet are published to-day, and will be found on the next page. From the latter we learn that the liabilities of the borough amount to £634 9s 6d, against which assets (which rates due and property) are put amounting in the aggregate to £lO3l 13s 3d. The borough has no public debt.

The Hospital Committee will hold their monthly meeting at the Town Hall this evening, at eight o’clock. Captain Edwin wired yesterday about noon, as follows “ Watch barometer ; bad weather is approaching from any direction between south-east and east and north ; glass to further fall, and within 12 hours sea become heavy.” We regret to state that Mr Frederick George, while riding towards home last Saturday afternoon, sustained some very severe contusions by being thrown from the horse he was galloping. It appears the horse slipped when crossing a culvert near Mr Peart’s farm, and fell with his rider. Mr George became unconscious for a considerable time ; he had a nasty cut on the head, and a shoulder and leg were severely bruised or lacerated. He was, however, able to ride into town here next day, where his injuries were carefully attended to ; and yesterday he returned home to lay np for a few days. The Hon. Mr Bromby (ex AttorneyGeneral of Tasmania) is announced to deliver a lecture on “ The English in Ireland.” The place is not yet fixed, but Saturday evening, the sth instant, is the day appointed for the lecture. The Rev. Father Bechinor will deliver a lecture in the Hibereian Hall, Goldsboroilgh, on Friday evening next, the 4th inst. It was reported yesterday, at Hokitika that Isbister, Bunz, and party had struck payable wash in their claim at the northern end of the Rimu lead.
