[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, March 14. A meeting of Mr J. Oram Shephard’s creditors was held yesterday, at which the liabilities were stated to be £40,000 and assets, £50,500. Of the liabilities £40,000 are secured by £50,000, the estimated value of the assets. Messrs Stead and Royse and A. C. Wilson were appointed a committee to investigate the position of the estate on behalf of the creditors. Tauranga, March 14. The Taupo correspondent of the Bay of Plenty Times says : —“ During last week several shocks of earthquake have been felt here; one of unusual severity occurred about 13 o’clock on Tuesday. The tremor of the ground was felt for about six seconds, and the shock was so violent that it half emptied a glass of water. The oscillation of the earthquake was from north west to north-east. It is not known if Tongarior is any way active, as the volcano has been cloud-capped for the last week. Auckland, March 14. Henry W. Durill was committed for trial on a charge of horse stealing. At the inquest on the body of Charles Baker, seaman of the schooner Saxon, the" jury returned an open verdict of “ Found drowned.” The evidence showed that Baker and the woman Susan Duncan had been in the dingy endeavoring to get on board the Saxon for the night, and that during Saturday night’s gale both perished. When Mr Bryce arrived at the Thames a crowd who assembled to hoot him were nicely sold. They mistook their man and followed Mr John Murray, Inspector of the Bank of New Zealand, hooting him the whole way.
