RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
♦ Monday, March 12. [Before T. R. Connell, and W. Barnett, Esqs., J.Ps.] Julia Bramston was charged with the larceny of a pair of boots of the value of £ l. She pleaded not guilty, but was convicted and sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour in the Hokitika Gaol.—The same prisoner was charged with drunkenness, and convicted and sentenced to pay 10s and costs 2s, or 24 hours’ imprisonment.—On another charge of making use of obscene language, she was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of £1 and costs 2s, or in default 48 hours’ imprisonment with hard labour in the Hokitika Gaol. Thursday, March 15. [Before T. R. Connell, and W. Barnett, Esqs., J.Ps.] Anne Evans was charged with assaulting the wife Stewart Robert Harris at Greenstone, and using abusive and insulting language towards the informant. Mr Perkins appeared for the informant, and stated that as the defendant had tendered an apology and paid expenses, with the permission of the Court he would withdraw the informations. He then read the apology, as follows : To Mr and Mrs Harris, Greenstone. I, Anne Evans, hereby express my regret at the unpleasantness which occurred between me and you at the Greenstone on Thursday last. I retract the expressions made use of on that occasion, and request that you will accept my apology for the same, and that you will withdraw the summonses issued herein, I hereby promising not to further interfere with either of you and to pay £5 towards the expenses incurred ; and I withdraw the summons I have issued.
