CRICKET-COMBINED AUSTRALIANS v. IVO BLIGH’S TEAM.
(Received January 2, 10.20 a.m.) Melbourne, January 1. The cricket match between the Australians and English teams was resumed to-day, when the Englishmen continued their second innings, which closed for a total of 169. The following are the scores:— Tylecote, bowled ... 38 Barlow, bowled ... 28 C. T. Studd, bowled ... 21 Bligh, bowled ... ... 3 A. G. Steele, l.b.w. ... 29 Leslie, bowled ... ... 4 Reid, bowled ... ... 29 G.. 8. Studd, caught ... 0 Bates, caught ... ... 11 Vernon, l.b.w. ... ... 3 Barnes, not out ... 2 Extras ... ... 11 Total 169 The Australians requiring 56 runs to win the match, then commenced their second innings. Massie went in first and was caught and bowled for 0. Murdoch scored 33 and Bannerman 25, both not out. The Australians thus won the match by nine wickets. The attendance at the match was enormous, the greatest interest being taken in the contest. Intense excitement prevailed towards the close of the game. The Australians’ bowling was extremely good and dead on the wicket. The ground was in much better order than yesterday. The return match will be played here on the 19th inst. (Received January 2, 2.45 p.m.) January 2. Twenty thousand persons were present at the cricket match yesterday. The weather was very unfavorable to the English.
