[NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, January 2. A man named John D. Gay attempted to commit suicide yesterday by opening a blood vessel in his arm, but his wound was not of a serious character.

An accident occurred on the Lyttelton and Christchurch railway yesterday. After the train that left Lyttelton at 12.20 p.m. had passed Hillsbro’, the station-master noticed something which he took to be a swag lying on the line about 200 yards in the direction of Christchui’ch. An examination showed that this was the body of a man fearfully mangled. The skull was split open, crushed at the back, both legs were cut off below the knee and cut to pieces by the wheels of the train. Later.

The body of the man killed on the railway yesterday was identified this morning by his wife and daughter as that of James Thompson, farmer, of St. Albans, ft is stated that Thompson had sold his property and intended proceeding to Invercargill. Wellington, January 1.

Dunedin, January 2, John Glendining, of Kirkpatrick and Glendining, while out shooting at Waikouaiti yesterday, met with a serious accident. The gun bnrsted, inflicting injury and rendering amputation of the left arm necessary.
