[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, June 6. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court this morning a youth named Bathurst Noel was charged with having assaulted and presented a revolver at a man named Dawkins, at the Exhibition. The evidence showed that a dispute arose as to the price of some articles on Dawkins’ stall, and the latter called Noel a liar, at the same time ordering him away. Noel refused to go, when Dawkins knocked him down, and then Noel presented a revolver at him, but he was pi evented from using it. Noel, in defence, pleaded serious provocation, and said that having lately been severely bitten by a dog he had since carried a revolver to protect himself. The statement about the dog was shown to be correct, and the Bench remarking that Dawkins had been the aggressor, dismissed the case, but confiscated the revolver. Last night a man named M'Neave was arrested for shooting with a revolver at John Granville, at Toomer’s boarding-house. Jealousy is said to have been the cause of the offence.
