LITERARY INSTITUTE.

A committee meeting of the Literary Institute was held was held on Wednesday night; presen'—Mr James Woodward (in the chair), Messrs Smart, Smith, Harre, Dennett, Duckworth, Wells, and the Rev. R. Fennell (Acting Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting having been read, th« Acting Secretary's report was lead, as follows: REPORT. Immediately after the last committee meeting, I, as directed by it, paid Kerr Arnott and Co. £4. Manson and Co. £5 and Mrs Phelan £7 6s. ' I also wrote Messrs Manson to stop the Queenslander and Australasian, and submit their reply. I have not yet definitely ordered any papers from Mr Spiers, of Kumara. I also wrote to the County Council ap-

plying for a subsidy. As the whole matter of subsidies is under discussion this day, it is impossible to say anything about, it yet. I have hot taken any steps re exchange of books with Stafford Literary Institute. I have forwarded the thanks of the committee to the Rev. E. A. Scott. As far as I can make out, the liabilities of the Institute are £33 12s 2d. The report as read was adopted. It was resolved to discontinue the Queenslander at the end of the present montbj and to order the Canterbury Times and Australasian from Mr Spiers. It was resolved that Messrs Dennett and Smart collect subscriptions from members residing on the Lead, that Messrs Duckworth and Wells do the same in Seddon street, and Messrs Harre and Fennell in Main street. It was resolved that the Weekly Scotsman, Cardiff Weekly Times, Nineteenth Century, and Harper's Monthly be ordered from Mr King, of London j and that the Home News be discontinued. It was further resolved to ask Mr King for his account to the end of June and that be be promised a remittance. It was resolved to hold a special meeting on Wednesday, 22nd iuSt. in order to elect a secretary. On the motion of Mr Fennell, seconded by Mr Dennett, Dr. Porter was elected a member of the committee. The meeting then adjourned.
