In order to supply some sort of amusement to visitors to the exhibition, the Mayor proposes to hold a series of athletic contests between interprovincial teams during the time it is open. He has issued circulars to all the prominent clubs, etc., in asking their help, and the idea will be ventilated at a meeting next week. Wellington, February 9. The following tenders were received for the Nelson-Grey month railway loading contract at Greymouth :—Accepted : Arnott and Seabrook, Greymouth, £160; declined: F. J. Gleeson, Greymouth, .£194; James Roynolds, Hokitiksi, £228 ; Henry Harris, Greymouth, £250. Dunedin, February 9. A settler at Tuapeka West, named Smith, has been committed for trial on a charge of stabbing a fellow settler. He was proceeding home from a meeting when they quarrelled, and during the struggle Smith stabbed the other with a pocketknife in the neck and thigh.
