Dunedin, November 18. A seaman, Alfred Palmer, on the Rio Grande, was arrested, charged with wounding the boatswain of the same vessel. The two had a quarrel, and Palmer, who was about to. take dinner* had a knife and fork in his hand. In the scuffle, the knife struck Carlson* the boatswain, in the side. Two children are reported having died at Wanaka through eating unripe fruit. A man mmed Lennway is supposed have been drowned at Gatlin’s River. He was sailing in a flat-bottomed boat with a companion, and it tilled. Lennway swam to shore, but has not sined been heard of. His mate was picked up very exhausted. Christchurch, November 18. A poll was taken to-day on the subject of borrowing JL 20,000 for the water works scheme proposed by the City Council. Great opposition has been manifested to the proposal, which however meets with general favor frorii the press. A sandwich man promenaded the town calling on the peop'e to vote ag dust it. The opponents of the measure were active in their endeavors to work up an agitation against the proposal. The result was it was rejected by 463 against 832. The Agricultural and Pastoral Association have offered to grant to Joubert and Twopenny the use of the grounds for the Exhibition for six months for ,£4OO. Westport, November 17. Munro addressed a crowded meeting last night. He was very well received. He does not bind himself to any party. A vote of confidence was carried unanimously. Auckland, November 19. At an inquest on George Brown, who fell through a verandah skylight, a verdict of accidental death was returned. The body of William M'Donald, drowned at Whangarei, has been recovered. A son of James TWr, Mahurangi Heads, was drowned crossing Omaha Flat. A man was found drowned at Big Omaha. The body was not identified. LATEST FROM PARIHAKA. Pungarehu, November 19. The prisoners who have been confined at Parihaka were, this morning, with the exception of Kereopa, who was forwarded by coach, sent to New Plymouth. New Plymouth, November 20. Kereopa Tapa, Tawraro, and Okeroa, the three prisoners required as witnesses against Hiroki, have been brought to town and lodged in gaoL It is expected that the case will be proceeded with on Tuesday. The prisoners from Parihaka were liberated at their own settlement, north of New Plymouth, and at once settled down quietly to their own ways before joining Te Whiti. They appeared to be completely disappointed at the result of affairs, and began to fear that their expectations as to Te Whiti’a supernatual powers will never be realised.
