OPENING OF THE CHRISTOHURCH CATHEDRAL. [.SPECIAL TO KUMAKA TIMES.] CnnisTOHLritcH, November 1. The Christchnrch Cathedral was formally opened to-day. The day is observed as a Eeneiiil holiday, and the ciiy is crowded witli visitors, hundreds being unable, to obtain admission, at the
"peninc ceremony. The Bishops of Christchurch, Nelson, and Wellingto'i were present. The Primate ofticiited. The Cathedral lied Is rang at 6 o'clock this morning and again prior to the opening ceremony. + [NEW ZEA.LA.NIi PRESS ASSOCIATION.! Wellington, October 31. Te Whiti addressed the Parihaka natives to-day. The speech was pacific. Te Whiti counselled them to make no resistance to the Europeans. He mentioned that when he had counselled resisting the Europeans, there were few on the land. This was now reversed, and it appeared to him that. every southerly wind brought more men. His Excellency has decided not to go south to the consecration of the Christchurch cathedral. The volunteers who arrived from the south vesterdny proceeded on to the front this evening. The Masterton men arrived in town to-night, and proceeded to the barracks. To-morrow the Wellington Cityßifl'.s, and Wairarapa Volunteers leave for the front. Invercargill, October 31. On Saturday the bodies of a woman and child were found in a ditch at One Tree Point, a few miles from Invercargill, in an advanced stage of decomposition. They have been identified as those of a young married woman named Barrism, and her child. The wouiaa was subject to fits, and apparently had been seized with one where she was found. She had been missing stftfee June* last.
