Melbourne, October 18. Mr Thorpe, teller of the Bank of Victoria, has been arrested on the charge of embezzling 250050v5., which he had replaced with copper coin. The case is not connected with the robbery of ,£2500 from the same bank last month. October 19. It now transpires that Thorpe, late teller of the Bank of Victoria, who was arrested yesterday charged with embezzling £2500, was rec. ntly suspended, and baa since that time returned the whole amount (£2500) in batches to his successor. He asserts that although he had used the money lie did not intend to steal it. He was brought up at the Police Court to-day charged with embezzlement. The case was remanded for a week, bait being allowed. It has transpired that the prisoner had invested money in a building society.
The progress report of the Police Commission has been issued. It recommends the superannuation of Superintendents Nicholson and Hare; the reduction of Sadlier, and disrating of Ward and Steele. The dismissal of the constables who were at Sberritt’s but at the time of the Kellys, and of Teacher and Wallace is also recommended. Superintendent Hare is severely condemned as a disturbing element in the force. The minority of the commissioners dissent from the recommendations of the report.
