PRESIDENT GARFIELD.
The new President of the United States— General Garfield—is, as is natural, the subject of many biographical sketches. From these the English public have learned, or may learn, particulars of his present history, all oF which will tend to increase their respect for the new Chief Magistrate of the Republic. General Garfield affords another example of “self-help." His mother was left a widow when he wag but two years old, and had to struggle hard to support her family. She now 1 lives to rejoice in her son’s promotion to the White House. At ten years of age he had to take his share in provide ing for the household by farm work, and at sixteen as a raule-driver. Bub he had brains and a love for books, and he managed to secure a college education, He has played his part as a teacher, preacher, soldier, lawyer, and politician, and in each case has scored a success which now culminates in his election to the highest office in the State. Physically, he is described as “ more than six feet in height, with broad shoulders, a massive head, and a robust constitution."
