THE LATE ARCHBISHOP STEINS
Dr. Steins, Primate of the Roman Catholic Church in New Zealand, who died in Sydney last week, was a native of Holland, and about seventy-three years of age, afid was, previous to his translation to New Zealand, Archbishop of Calcutta. He was appointed to the Archbishopric of Auckland in 1879, and arrived in this colony in December, 1879, bringing with him a number of Benedectine monks to assist him in the missionary work of the Church. The roost reverend Primate speedily gained
the profoundest respect and iiffention of the Korean Catholics in New Zealand', and proved himself to be alike able and ze duns in the discharge of his duties. L 1 ruin the lirst, however - , it. was evident that .‘his health had been broken down by his residence in India, and in June last, he had, at Iris own request, to be relieved of iris charge. He then started for England, in tire hope that the voyage "would prove beneficial to his health, bdt never got further than Sydney, where he was the guest of Archbishop Vaughan, and where, after a fr-vp-weeks’ sufferittgj he died.—Dunedin Herald.
