BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, September 8. The election for the vacant seat in the House of Commons for the County of Tyrone, Ireland, took place to-day, and resulted in the return of a Liberal by a narrow majority. A Parnellite, who was one of the candidates, was defeated by a large majority. Washington, September 8.

The latest news from Long Branch, regarding the President, report that the feverish symptoms, which appeared shortly after his arrival, have now been delayed, and his condition has improved.

Ottawa, September 8. The international regatta, which was to have taken place yesterday at Toronto, has been postponed until today, owing to unfavorable weather.

Melbourne, September 10. The steamship Ferret has been purchased by the owners of the Euro steamer, of Adelaide, to replace steamer Euro, which was wrecked last month at Beachport, RANDWIOK RACES. Sydney, September 8. At the Randwick Spring Meeting today, the race for the Crown Plate miles, resulted as follows:—Wellington, 1; Wheatear, 2; Etna, 3. Sydney Handicap, I|-miles, was won by Waxy ; Zulu, 2 ; Warhawk, 3. September 10. The last day’s races of the Australian Jockey Club Spring meeting took place to-day at Randwick. Randwick Plate, 3 miles, was won by Wellington, with Marmora second. Steeplechase, 3 miles, resulted as follows :—Wrangler, 1 j Abdallah, 2 ; Jupiter, 3. Members’ Handicap, 1 mile and 1 furlong, was won by Wheatear, the Derby winner.
