[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Kaikouka, September 5. The report received by G. F. Bnllen, Esq., on Saturday, from the School of Mines* gives the result of the crushing of a ton of quartz from the Mount Fyffe (Kaikoura) Rangej as most satisfactory, showing over sixteen pennyweights of gold per ton, in addition to' pyrites, with which the quartz is thickly impregnated. It shows over nine ounces of gold per ton of pyrites. The reef is favorably situated on the run of A. S. Collins, within eight miles of Kaikoura Jetty. A meeting will, be held to prosecute the matter. Wellington, September 6. The New Zealand Government have received a despatch enclosing a preliminary report from the Royal Astronomical Society, relating to the transit of Venus in 1882. The report contains suggestions as to stations favorable for observations of the different phases. The report states that Australia aiid New Zealand should be the best stations for observing the phase known as the egress retarded. The society suggest that Auckland would be, probably, the best site for observation. in New' Zealand; and further that the New Zealand paity of three gentlemen should leave London about July Ist, arriving at Auckland the first week in September, thus giving them time to consult with local observers.
