[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Hokitika, May 18. The Land Board to-day sold an area of 500 acres, formerly a mineral lease of John Bevan and others, to the Mount ■Rangitoto Silver Mining Compand, Limited, for .£SOO. Two more mineral leases at Rangitoto were to-day granted and rents in advance paid. Three were granted last Board day, and others are in the course of survey. Henry Young and others have paid another year’s rent on their leases—£62 10s. There are also a number of applications for coal and copper leases in the Jackson’s Bay district. Dunedin, May 18. Captain Garrard being an excellent swimmer, surprise is expressed by his friends that he did not swim ashore. It transpires now from the position the body was found, etc., that he evidently did try to swim ashore, but was apparently caught in the kelp, A Chinaman was found dead in a water race in the Hindon district. There was only two inches of water.
He had been dead about three weeks. The verdict at the inquest was that he met his death through an epileptic fit. Francke, the patentee of the totalisator, is having a Writ served on all the Jockey Club Committees here for using his invention. Christchurch, May 18. With reference to the man Hudson, sent down to the Hospital by the Patea County Council, suffering from opthalmia, that body sent down a request not to keep him longer than necessary. This elicited a reply from the house surgeon at a meeting of the Board to-daj, from which it appeared that sight has been completely restored to the man’s left eye, and it is hoped that in two or three weeks the remaining eye will be in equally good order. The case was regarded as a very difficult one at the time it was sent here. Wellington, May 18. The census returns show the population of the electoral districts of the Colony to be 486,861 ; shipping, 2500 j Chatham Islands, 200. The latter two being estimated, give a total population of 489,561. In the Divorce Court a rule nisi has been granted in Hill v. Hill. The three J ndges expressed in strong terms their conviction that the respondent’s story was a tissue of deliberate perjuries, and that he was a most practised liar.
