Melbourne, May 18. The Rev. James Chalmers has written a letter with reference to the murders which have recently been committed by the natives of New Guinea, and recommending that the Queensland Government should despatch a number of native troopers to punish the perpetrators of those outrages. It is understood that the detached squadron, after visiting Melbourne and Sydney, will proceed to Auckland. Adelaide, May 17. Mata is favorite for the Adelaide Birthday Cup, at 3 to I. The census taken on the third April shows the population of South Australia to be 275,000.
