April 26. The man Garrett, injured in the tramway accident, still remains unconscious.
Sixty of the Maori prisoners are to be released, and will go north by the Hinemoa on Thursday. Thirteen remain behind.
Wellington, April 26. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, a number of women of ill-fame; were summoned under the Yagrant Act. In adjourning the cases for a week his Worship said—“ There is no doubt that prostitution per se is not unlawful, but if accompanied by disorder or indecent exposure, or anything that grossly shocks the public mind, then it is unlawful.” Defendants were bound over to appear for sentence this day week. Christchurch, April 25. An inquest on the body of Rice Folkes was held to-day, and a verdict of suicide while in a state of temporary insanity was returned. The foreman of the jury thought the police should have obtained evidence as to Folkes’s financial position, as someone might possibly have robbed him. He was known, however, to be in financial difficulties, and from the position in which the body was found, with a gun tied to the left foot, there can be no doubt of suicide.
April 26. A woman named Day, 43 years’ old, committed suicide today, by taking strychnine. She -was intemperate and fond of quarrelling with her husband, who was in the house engaged in cooking when Ihe swallowed the poi -ou,
A man named Stalker dropped down dead while attending a sale at Ashburton yesterday afternoon. The supposed cause is apoplexy l TimarU, April 25. At the inquest to-day on the body of H. L. Nathan, found dead in bed yesterday morning, a verdict that deceased committed suicide by inhaling chloroform while suffering from temporary insanity was returned. He left a letter which fully justified a verdict, Auckland, April 26. The mail steamer brings Lady Gordon, Miss Gordon, and two children, the two Misses and Captain Knollys. The City of Sydney sailed this afternoon for San Francisco with a large number of passengers, amongst whom are the Rev. A. Reid, Wesleyan representative for the (Ecumenical Conference, and the Rev. C. M. Pym, whose services here were recognised by a farewell meeting. Cole’s circus is also on board.
