London, April 22. It now transpires that the proposal of the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone that the funeral of the late Earl Beaconsiield should be publicly performed, was made by the desire of the Queen, but that her Majesty has deferred to the wishes expressed by the late Earl's will that the funeral should be of a simple character. The interment will take place at Hughendeu on Tuesday next.
April 22. A convention of Land Leaguers was held to-day in Ireland, at which 1000 members were present. They passed resolutions setting forth the definite refusal of the League to accept the provisions of the Irish Land Bill now before Parliament, unless material amendments are made.
Calcutta, April 22. News has been received from Candahar to the effect that the evacuation of the city by the British force which was stationed there, has been completed. The town and district are now under the control of the Ameer's Governor.
Constantinople, April 22. Despatches have been received from Dervish Pasha, commanding the Turkish troops in Western Ronmelia, stating that the advance of his troops has been forcibly opposed by a body of insurgent Albanians at the River Vardan, and that an engagement has taken place at Uskup, resulting in the defeat of the rebels.
LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Sydney, April 22. The following are the acceptances for the A.J.O. Plat*, to be run for to-mor-row :—Progress, Wellington, Sapphire, Martimhile, Good Morning, Orient, Richmond, Canary.
Communications are passing between Sir Henry I'arkos (Premier) and the Colouial Secretary of New South Wales and the Governor of Hong Kong, relative to the present Chinese rush to this Colony. Most of the new arrivals are going to the tin mines. Brisbane, April 23. The steamer Brisbane has arrived at Cooktown, from Hong Kong, with 350 Chinese, one suffering from emall-pox, and the vessel has thrrefore been quarantined.
M'l I wraith, the Premier, telegraphs from London that he has come to an agreement for the company to carry out the trans-continental railway scheme subject to surveys confirming the representations which have been made. A surveying expedition will leave London for Queensland in the middle of May.
