Oamaru, April 21. An inquest was held to-day on a cliild nyerl four, named Lammas, who died suddenly on Tuesday. The verdict was to the etFecfc that death was accelerated by neglect on the part of its parents, and the jury, in cautioning them, said they had nanowly escaped a charge of manslaughter. The jury found "That deceased, Ropoama, met his death daring a quarrel with Rawiri Kepa and Maiy Ropoama ; that death was caused by injuries received during a scuffle or tight on Saturday, 9th April, and recorded a verdict of manslaughter against Rawiri Kepa and Mary Ropoama." WanSan*ui, April 21. Mr Thos. Peakej architect, was found dead in his house last night. It is surmised he had a fit. He leaves a widow and family in Christchurch. Timaru, April 24. A young man named Nathan, a clerk, was found dead in bed this morning. A bottle of chloroform was near at hand.
CHRISTCHURCtt, April 22. The Government have determined to introduce a Bill next session embodying the primciple of conceding land to the promoters of railway construction in the manner in which it is proposed to deal with the West Coast Railway.
April 23. A warrant haa been issued for the arrest of W. W. Charters, who is now known to have left in the ship Orari, for London. It is reported that defalcations to the extent of £2OOO have been discovered in the acconnts of the Sydenham Building Society, of which he was manager. The warrant will be despatched by the mail leaving to-day. Dunedin, April 22. The annual meeting of the Daily Times and Witness Company was held to-day. The balance-sheet showed the nett profit for the year to be £1349 4s. April 24. An accident of a nlost alarming character, resulting in the injury of 12 persons, one of whom is almost sure to die, occurred at half-past 11 last night, on the Roslyn tramway, Wellington, April 23. The complete returns of the Customs revenue collected in New Zealand have been received, and show a total of £1,309,848, being an increase of £126,307 on the previous year. Auckland, April 23. Twelve seamen of the ship Oxford, from London, were charged with broaching cargo to the extent of £IOO. One was discharged and the others remanded for sentence on Wednesday. The yacht race between the Madge and Observer was their fourth contest. The Madge wen by three minutes. The Observer was badly ballasted.
