The Kumara Times. Published Every Evening. MONDAY, APRIL 25, 1881.

The remains of Charles Cooper, late Warder at the Kumara Hospital, were conveyed to their last resting-place, the Greenstone Cemctoi-y, yesterday afternoon. The mournful cortege proceeded from the Hospital, at one o'clock, to Holy Trinity Church, where a portion of the burial service was read over the coffin by the Rev. E. A. Scott ; and from thence the mourners in the procession (unheeding the rain) became greatly augmented as they wended towards the Zigzag, for Greenstone. The deceased was very much liked by the patients ; but through his health, failing him for some months back, the heavier portion of the work connected with the Hospital fell to his industrious and persevering wife. The Rev. E. A. Scott, Incumbent of Holy Trinity Church, proceeds to-morrow morning on a visit to Christchurch, for about three weeks. The Rev. Thomas Plavell, Incumbent of Merivale, Christchurch, (and, as many of our readers will recollect, formerly of Wcstport, Charleston, and Reofton) will take charge of the district during Mr Scott's absence. At a meeting of the Benevolent Society this morning, Sergeant Emmcrson was appointed Honorary Secretary during the temporary absence of the Rev, E. A. Scott. The Voiuntcer monthly inspection parade takes place at the Adelphi Hall tomorrow evening. Wellington harbor has been visited for the last few days by immense shoals of mackerel. Some of the "hauls" have been so large, round at Oriental Bay and Evans Bay, that the fishermen have had great difficulty in dragging their nets.

At the meeting of the Westland Education Board on Thursday last, Mr H. L. Robinson was re-elected a School Commissioner.

This morning's Argus says :—'' The mile race that was to have taken place between Jenkins and King, and which has excited considerable interest, appears to have fallen through, at least for the present. There is a chance of its being run off at Kumara on Saturday next; and if not then, it may be postponed till the 24th May. It is understood that whatever obstacle there may be in coming to terms does not come from King's side, as lie is willing to run the race at any time required. Between two such proved longdistance runners, such a race would be worth looking at." Two new German gunboats called at Auckland on the sth inst., on their way to Apia, Samoa, from Melbourne. The crews were smart, active-looking young men, and the vessels were in beautiful order. A French man-of-war, the Belliquese, is expected there shortly from Tahiti, having been formerly in Peruvian waters watching over French interests. She is fitted up as a ram, carries an electric light, and her guuns are loaded by machinery and fired by electricity. To those in search of merriment, visit S. S. Pollock's, and obtain the great Irish song "The Babies in our Block," or "Little Sally Waters"; price sixpence. [Adyt.] For list of prizes in a grand af t-unioii at Hokitika see fourth page.—[Advt.]
