The matter was coldly taken up when first mooted by the Govern* ment) but Mr Meares set to werk ener* getically and the exchange will soon be established* Preparations are now go* ing on, and the necessary wires will be got ready. Some 30 or 40 persons were fined to* day for unregistered dogs, and the police have still a large number of cases. A feeling has been expressed by a portion of the public that both defend* ants in the murder cases were equally mad, and that further inquiry ought to be made in Beaufield's instance. Wellington, April 8. The Auckland Jockey Club held a meeting to-day in reference to the stif» fening of Golden Crown in the Pan* mure Handicap. Edward Hunt Jaggar, has been sentenced to two years' hard labor on three charges of forgery.
