BRITISH AND FOREIGN. TERRIBLE EARTHQUAKE AND LOSS OF LIFE. London, April 6. A disturbance occurred at Ballinamore, Ireland, to-day, between the police and people. The latter were fired upon by the police, and a girl, who was in the crowd, was shot dead. The detached coasting with Her Majesty's ship Inconstant, Bacchante (with which are Princes Albert Victor and George of Wales), Tourmaline, Carisford, and Cleopatra, under the command of Admiral Earl williatn, which was ordered from its cruise in January last to Natal, for the purpose of landing a brigade for service iu the Transvaal, have received orders to proceed from the Cape to Melbourne. It has not transpired whether any other Australian ports are to be visited by the squadron. A bulletin issued this evening reports that Earl Beaconsfield is making satisfactory progress towards recovery. April 7. A bulletin issued this morning reports that Beaconsfield had a serious relapse during the night, and is now agaiu in a very critical state. Sir William Jenner, one of the physicians-in-ordinary to the Queen, has consequently been summoned to confer with other medical attendants of his lordship. News has been received that an earthquake of a terrible character has been experienced in ihe Island of Ohio, in the Sea, on the Smyrna Coast, Asia Minor, and the results have been most disastrous to life and property. Accounts to hand estimate that fully 5000 (sic) persons have met with their deaths. In the House of Commons to-day, a Bill was introduced by the Government for the Amendment of the Irish Land Laws. It was laid on the table, and read a first time. The measure provides for the creation of Courts of law to fix rents which shall thereafter remain unaltered for a period of 15 years. The Court will also undertake the regulation of land tenure and land sales. A Commission will be appointed to make grants to facilitate immigration, to assist tenants to purchase their holdings, and to buy laud from land-holders who may be willing to sell. It will be optional with landlords and tenants to evoke the aid of the Courts. It is intended that the Act shall be partially restiospective.
Rome, April 6\ Signor Cairoli, President of the Council of Ministers, made a statement to-day in the Chamber of Deputies in regard to the state of affairs iu Tunis. In the course of his speech he stated that the English and Italian Governments had arrived at a complete agreement as to the course they would pursue in regard to the Tunisian question; " + LATEST AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, April 8. The first sitting of a Conference of Committees of the Legislative Council and Assembly to consider the Reform Bill was held to-day. Sir Charles ■Sladen, M.L.C.) discussed the question at length, Mr Berry replied, and a conversation of a desultory character fol* lowed. The Conference has adjourned till Monday next. It is expected that the prorogation of Parliament will take place on Thursday, 14th instant. Sydney, April 7.
