RAILWAY FROM THE EAST TO THE WEST COAST.
A very largely attended meeting as* sembled at the Town Hall, Greymouth, last night, to express an opinion regarding the projected railway between the East and West Coast of the Island. His "Worship the Mayor occupied the chair. The Bishop of Nelson, who only arrived in Greymouth just before the meeting, was present, and spoke very logically in favor of the proposed project. The following resolutions were put to the meetiug, and carried unanimously: (1.) " That this meeting being thoroughly convinced of the benefits which will accrue to this district by the construction of a railway between Canterbury and the West Coast, will co-operate with the Canterbury promoters in bringing about a speedy commencement and furtherance of the undertaking." (2.) " That a local committee consisting of Messrs Masters, Lahman, Nancarrow, Kennedy, Guinness, Kilgour, Petrie, Warner, W. S. Smith, Wm. Perkins, Thomas, and Jas. Kerr . (with power to add to their number),." be appointed to communicate with the Central Committee in Christchurch, with the view to obtain further information on the subject before this meeting, and .'■ to place such information before the public at as early a date as possible." (3.) " That in granting concessions to a company to construct and work a . railway to connect the East and West Coast, the Government should stipulate for a seasonable scale of traffic charges, and that minerals should be carried at a fair and reasonable rate, with power of Government revision every three years : also, that construction of the line should be carried on simultaneously from both ends to its completion."
