[new ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Christchurch, January 12. The Anuabella’s cargo of sugar from Mauritius was sold in one lot to C. W. Turner by the importers—price withheld. Hulston won the 100 and 120 yards events in his run off with Hutton, of Auckland, to-day, easily. Hutton sprained his leg in Dunedin. Time of 100 yards was 10 one-fifth secs., very smart time. The result of the University Examination for 1880 are published. Ten have passed the first section B.A. examination, including one lady. Sixteen passed the final examination for B.A. eight of whom are from Canterbury College, and five from Otago University. One is a lady, Miss Margaiet Edgar, whose sister is also a B.A. and was the first lady in the world to gain that distinction. James Hay M.A. has passed a final examination for L.L.B. degree. The following pass honors and M.A. examination : Helen Connon, W, H. Herbert, and J. R. Thornton, all from Canterbury College. Timaru, January 12. The price of land in this district ie again rising rapidly, and in all branches of trade there is marked improvement. Moss Jonas to-day sold 312 acres of land, five miles from town, at £l3 IQs per acre. Dunedin, January 12. The Union Steam Shipping Company purpose sending either the Te Anna or the Wakatipu to Hong Kong towards the end of April with cargo and Chinese passengers, of whom there will probably be a large number. The steamer will proceed to Foo Choo and bring the first shipment of new season teas to New Zealand.
Auckland, January 12. The house of Preston, a settler of Pukekaha was burnt down, his son aged 15, an imbecile was alone in the house. He was rescued but died of burns received. The brigantine Oceola, took for New York, £IO,OOO worth of Kauri Gum.
