BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, January 11. The rumors current last week of intended Fenian raids on volunteer armouries are renewed, and are again receiving the attention of the authorities. Reports now received point to
the possibility of attacks on the military establishments at Gosport and Chester a'rtd extensive precau tions are being taken At both places to withstand any assaults It is officially announced that LieutGeneial Sir Donald Stewart, who comrhaifded the British army in Cabal, will shortly succeed General Sir Frederick Haines, as Cornttlander-ift-ChieF in India. BcmbaV - , January 11. • News has been received here that a plot has been discovered among the natives of Kolapore, a town in the south of this Presidency, to assassinate all the European residents in the place. Owing to the detection of the conspiracy the danger was averted, and a number of arrests have been made of the wouldbe assassins.

Company’s steamship Hydaspes with the inward Suez mail, dated London, December 3. All hope of saving the Hereford has been abandoned. There are now thirteen feet of water in her hold. The business premises of Beckett, an American importer, Barrack street, were totally destroyed by fire last night, all efforts to subdue the flames being fruitless. Beckett ordinarily slept on the premises, and as he cannot now be found it is feared he perished in the fire. January 12. It has transpired that Wni. Beckett whose premises were destroyed by fire last night, was absent at the time from Sydney, he having gone to Shoalhaven. The insurances comprise, on the stock, Mercantile, £4000; New Zealand Company, £4000; City Mutual, North British, and London and Lancashire Company's, each £2000; total, £14000; on the building, United Company, £6OOO, half of which was re insured in the Victoria and Australian Alliance .Company. Mr Skurthorpe telegraphs that he has obtained the journal of Leichardt the explorer for his whole trip, and Classan’s journal for half his journey. Both are in good preservation. Cooktown, January 12. The French war ship Distress (?) reports that she visited Basilisk Island, the scene of the massacre of the French naturalists, and destroyed a multitude of huts and plantations, but was unable to reach the Natives owing to the scrub and rocks. She also found a large barque wrecked near Brooker Island. The boats had left for Sydney or New Caledonia, leaving the captain’s wife and some seamen on board.
