NEW SOUTH WALES. A gallant rescue of Annie Leonard was effected on Sunday off the rocks at Newcastle. It appears she was running barefooted and fell into an excavation, which probably she was not aware of. Hel 1 cries attracted a man named Diamond, who got down the cliffs and plunged into the sea at the risk of his life and Caught her s They were both washed ashore* and then into the sea, but at last managed to clutch the rock by which they hung for ten minutes, half drowned. Subsequently a breaker washed them high and dry. VICTORIA. On Wednesday the congregatioii of the Scotch Church presented the Rev, Mr Strong with an address, a silver salver, and 200 sovs. A proposition has been submitted to the City Council, to lay red gum cubes, keyed, instead of road metal, as a preventative against dust. The total attendance up to Saturday at the Exhibition, was 570, 124. The number who travelled by railway on New Year’s day, was 54,519. SOUTH AUSTRALIA. Last Thursday the bush fires caused great damage to several runs on Ellis’s Cooler station, Shora; wool, men’s hut and contents, also the yards and a great length of fencing and grass were burnt; loss £2OOO. A large quantity of grass and fencing was destroyed on Ham’s estate. Albert Plate had a cottage burnt on the adjoining land. Gardiner’s Mount Schanck estate, 30,000 acres of grass, 15 miles of fencing, and a' few;; sheep were destroyed. A considerable quantity of grass and other property on Crow’s run. On the'lands of Templeman, Gully, Reogh, Ryan, Kelstry, much property Was destroyed. The fire near Glenelg River swept a large tract of pastoral country. Burnett’s return tour in the north is now set at rest till February.. :The numbers of temperance pledges taken in the Colony is 1700. Parliament opened qn Tuesday. The Governor’s speech referred to the proceedings of the late Conference, specially the agreement between South Australia and New South,Wales. The speech also explained that it was not proposed to bring any other business before Parliament, The leader, of the Opposition warmly - attacked the Government’s proceeding as unconstitutional, in imposing'new taxes without the consent of Parliament. A warm debate ensued. -The Treasurer made a telling reply, saying the .question was whether the action was not justified by special exceptional circumstances. The tone of the House is generally in favor of the Government. The Ad-dress-in-Reply was carried without division. QUEENSLAND. Tho price of the Courier has been reduced to twopence. A correspondent from the Gulf country reports that on December 9th the weather broke, and there were thunderstorms nightly. The grass is Inxnriant on the Cambridge Downs. The Manmnr arrived at Cooktown this morning from Foa Chow. The news from the Darwin is discouraging. Everyone is ill on the river, including the health officer.
