The Works Department purposes constructing a tramway to Sandrid«e to give employment to the unemployed ; also covering the hills with clay and' otherwise improving the locality. A libel action has taken place between the rival editors of the Colac papers. The editor of the Herald, charged the editor of the Reformer, with having formerly, as Madame Janin's check agent, committed sundry offences. He represented hirn as a prisoner in gaol with his hair cropped, and madd other similar' insinuations. The latter claimed £ISOO damages. A verdict was given for £250. It is stated that £64,000 has lapsed to the Government, owing to certain religious bodies not taking up the grant in aid. A policeman has Been arrested for a robbery in a house of ill-fame. A young woman has been admitted into the hospital suffering from poison taken in infant food, colonially made.. . It is stated that the Kellys have frequently been seen in the Stratlibogie ranges. It is believed that Kate Kelly supplies them with provisions. The body of a men, shot through the head, was found in the Cemetery lieserve, with a revolver by his side and a paper signed John Mailer. Fresh cases of death from diphtheria are reported from the country districts. The estate of the late Rabbi Rentel was sworn under five thousand pounds 1 . The police raid after the Kellys has again entirely failed. ,I't is stilted, that local sympathy is with them and the residents give them warnings. It is probable that the Payment of Members Bill will be stone-walled unless the Harbor Trust Bill is first considered, with a view of averting the stoppage of the works and a deprivation of employment. Sir Samuel Wilson has received a letter from the Duke of Manchester stating that he intends visiting the : Melbourne Exhibition with his young* est daughter.
