London, May 13. The homeward mails via Brindisi were delivered to-day. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is £15,875,000. Consols, 99§ ; five per cent. New Zealand loans 1889, 104£. Four and a half per cent. loan, 90. The Australian cricketers commenced their first match to-day at Southampton v. 18 gentlemen of Hampshire. The weather was fine, and the Australians went in and scored 250. Their innings was a fine one, and their play much admired. Murdoch made the top score of 97, and Boyle made 50, both caught out. The English men went in, and had two wickets down for 43 when the stumps were drawn.

May 14. Prince Leopold has started on his tour through Canada and the United States.

It is stated that the Chief Secretary for Ireland (Right Hon. W. E. Forster) recommends the adoption fo a policy of coercion towards Ireland with the view- to settle the difficulties which beset Government in that country. The ci-ickot match between the Australian team and eighteen gentlemen of Hampshire was resumed and concluded to-day. The Englishmen scored li6 in their first innings, and then followed and scored 113 in tiie second innings. The Australians thus won the match in one innings, with 21 runs to spare. May 15. May 15. Agricultural statistics show that the wheat crops in Victoria have yielded 139.1 bushels per acre. The quantity produced shows an increase of five per cent. The Argus, in a loader in to-day’s issue, comments upon the gravity of the political situation in Victoria, and declares that Service’s task is one of extreme difficulty. The speech of Sir John O’Shauassy in the Assembly on Tuesday last, which was adverse to the Government, is much discussed.
