In consequence of the lengthy nature of Mr Seddon’s speech of Saturday last, we are compelled to hold over several locals and other matter.
The Oriental Exhibition will be positively open for the last time in this town this evening, as to-morrow the proprietors leave for Greymouth, therefore all those who have not yet visited this collection of Eastern curiosities should avail themselves of the only opportunity offered tonight. The attention of the local Rifle ‘Volunteers is directed to a notice that appears in another column.
Mr R. C. Reid, M.H.R., addressed a meeting of the electors at the Town Hall, Hokitika, on Saturday evening, his Worship the Mayor in the chair. Mr Reid spoke for nearly two hours, giving, an outline of the proceedings of last session, and indicating the various matters of interest which were likely to engage the attention of the Legislature during the forthcoming session. He intimated his intention of supporting Sir George Grey as loader of the Liberal party, and commented severely on the manner in which the.present Government have towards this district. Mr Reid was well received, and at the conclusion of his address a vote of thanks for his speech, and of confidence in him as a representative was carried unanimously, on the motion of Mr John Bevan, seconded by Mr John Cross.
