Wellington, April 12. A private telegram received here, states that the Newcastle miners have consented to the reduction in the getting price proposed by the owners-, and that on and after to-day a reduction of 4s per ton will be made in the price of coal at the pit’s nioutti. Messrs Caldwell’s stores at Cheltenham, Peilding, was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The building was insured for £IOO and the stock for £IOO, both in the National.
The police have been making inquiries in connection with the fire at
Beatherston, but are unable to give any eause for the outbreak. It is stated that tlie builaings were over-insured. Christchurch, April' 12. Tho libel case, Bracken v. D.tnvll, came on at the Supreme Court to-day. By a mistake a common jury bad assembled, whereas a special jury had been applied for, and after a good deal of legal argument, his Honor refused to try the case that day, and the record was withdrawn. Judge Johnston stigmatised the proceedings as a farce, and told the jury he was sorry he could not fix the blame precisely, or he would have made the offending side pay the jurors.
