BRITISH AND FOREIGN.
London, April 9. The total quantity of wheat afloat for great Britain amounts to 9,900,000 quarters. Best Australian beef tallow, 325; best mutton, 345; consols, 98£. The Orient Co/s steamship Lusitania arrived at Plymouth to-day. The new loan of two millions for Queensland proved a brilliant success, it has been subscribsd thrice over.
Lord Hampton (formerly Sir John Parkington) is dead. Prince Gortschakoff, Chancellor of the Russian Empire, is seriously ill. The elections for north-east Lancashire took place to-day, and resulted in the return of two Liberals—Lord Hartington and Mr Grafton—in place of two Conservatives, who represented the constituency in the last Parliament. April 10. Consols have advanced and are now quoted at 98|.
April 11. The Observer, of to-day, states that the Marquis of Salisbury, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, is about to be raised to a Dukedom. LATEST AUSTRALIAN. NEWS. Sydney, April 10. April 11. Mr Lattery, the prothonotary, has been dismissed for insubordination, lie has obtained legal opinion that he has been wrongfully dismissed. Melbourne, April 10. The Intercolonial boat race was won by Victoria, beating New South Wales by three lengths easily. It is announced that a further sum of .2100,000 is required for the International Exhibition-
Au Order of the Executive Council has been issued providing for the free importation of oats intended for conversion into oatmeal for export. Obituary—Archdeacon James, from diptheria, caught at a picnic. Eleven others who were at the same picnic all are now ill with diptheria.
April 12. The Government lil%e decided to withdraw in three months the rewards now offered for the capture of the Kelly gang. * Brisbane, April 12. Lange, a prospector, reports having discovered splendid looking auriferous country at Sefton river Carpentaria. Mr Jack, Government Geologist, has prospected Cape York unsuccessfully. He was speared through the neck by natives while they were attacking the camp, but has now quite recovered from the effects of the wound. Cooktown, April 12. The Eastern and Australian Mail teamer sßowen has arrived here from Singapore with the Torres Strait mail. She brings news that the French Admiral has been instructed to occupy Tonquin. He will levy a duty of 2 per cent on imports, 1 per cent on exports, and 2 pgr cent per ton on all vessels leaving for Manilla:
