READY FOR SERVICE.
Last Friday* week, in consequence of the unsettled state of Native affairs generally, Lieut. Strange offered to the Government, through Colonel Packe, the officer commanding the Christchurch district, the services of three detachments of the E battery of the Christchurch Artillery. It was proposed, should the services of the men be needed, that they should t ike their two guns up with them, a 12-pounder Armstrong, and a 24-pounder howitzer. The subjoined telegraphic replies were received on the same day, and they were read at last evening’s drill (says the Lyttelton Times of the 11th inst.), when 30 men signed their names for
active service. The roll strength of the Company is 64 : “The Government received with great pleasure that patriotic and important offer of the services of three detachments of the E Battery of Artillery Volunteers, and should any outbreak unhappily take place—which the Government hope by their preparation to prevent—the services of the detachment will be thankfully accepted. “ ti. S. Whitmore.” “ Hon. Col. Whitmore desires you to thank the detachments of E Battery for proffer of services, and to state that it has been noted. “ H. E. Reader, “ Lieut-Col., U.S. Defence.” The Wellington Volunteer Artillery have also offered to send up three gnus and a detachment to the front if required.
