[NEW ZEALAND PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Sydney, June 7. An intercolonial cricket match will be played at Sydney during the Exhibition. The Premier has given notice to introduce a bill to prevent the influx of criminals from New Caledonia. Adelaide, June 6. The Quakers have petitioned for the discontinuance of drill in public schools, as opposed to the principles of Christianity. Captain Swann, of the barque Pinnie Main, from San Francisco, was fined £2O for assaulting the steward. The prosecutor was released from the vessel, having sworn that he was in danger of his life. Mr H. Harris, auctioneer at Strathally, was to-day sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for forging a bank guarantee. Melbourne, June 7. The investigation into the escape of Jeffrey, a French convict, from gaol, shows that the escape was accomplished with the aid of a stick and pice of iron, by which he unlocked the cell.
