KUMARA VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE.

The adjourned monthly meeting of; the Kurtiara Volunteer Fire Brigade was held at the Claiendon Hotel last evening. Present: Captain Powell,(in the chair), Lieut. Wood, Messrs Skilton, North, King, Magee, O'Brien, Love, O'Hara, and Giez. ' The minuses of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £2 10s in the Union Bank. Acting-Lieut. Wood reported all gear in good working order. It was resolved that Mr Wood act as Lieutenant of the Brigade during the ! absence on leave of Lieut Anderum. I Mr North was elected Foreman of; the lire company for the remainder of the term, Mr Love being appointed Deputy-Foreman pro tern. It was resolved that a committee, consisting of the Captain, Secretary, and .Mr O'Bn'an, visit the Mayor aud Councillors re position of the Brigade, and report the result of their interview at the next monthly meeting. PICKING POCKETS IN A BALLOON. A couple of pick-pockets have chosen the captive balloon at Paris as the scene j of their operations. A young English ■ female, of attractive exterior, had of j late so frequently ascended in the sere- j stat, accompanied by a well dressed I man with a wooden leg, that the cir- j cuinstance was noticed. Very recently two ladies, after returning from their ! aeronautic excursion, remarked that j their purses had dissappeared. At the same time it was observed that the j female and her companion hastened j away in s very suspicions manner. The j police being informed what had hap- j pened to the two ladies stooped the j couple, and took them to thecommissary. j The pockets of the man having been j examined, no less than twenty port- ' monies were found in his possesion, containing a aggregata sum of 30,000 francs. Both were committed to prison. '
