LATEST UNPUBLISHED.
Wellington, January 15w I The Chronicle publishes Dr. Skae's ' report on the Mount View Asylum at Wellington. The report is of a most sensational character, showing that the institution is scandalously overcrowded, beds are made up in the bath-room and other unusual places, and the patients are wedged into some of the rooms so as to be scarcely able to move. He speaks of the impossibility of discipline under the present circumstances, of disgusting practices of patients who are unable to be restrained by supervision, and says it would be an undeserved compliment to call it a prison, an in no sense can it be called an asylum. He also refers to the danger of serious crimes, such as murder, etc., occnrring through the disorganised state of the institution ; and advises the Government that a circular should be sput to the Magistrates of the Districts to instruct them not to commit any more patients to the asylum in its present condition. Mr Dignan, M.H.R., is to be called to the Upper House.
