BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Borough Council Was held in the Town Hall last evening. Present: Crs. Pearn (in the chair), Hannan, O’Hara,- Campbell, Corufoot, Hanna, George, Ancher, and Blake. -The minutes of the last, as also the special meeting held last Monday week, •were read and confirmed.
The outward correspondence—consisting of letters to the Secretary of the Hospital (re charge for Hall) ; Spray and party (re Dam); A. Scott (re insurance) ; Mrs Elms (re cottage) ; W. Runcie (re complaint about rates) • J. Haworth (re rates) —was read and approved of.
Letters from—A. Scott (re insurance) ; Haworth (re rates) ; Undersecretary for Public Works (re covering in race in Fourth street) ; Colonial Secretary (re Arahura Road Board and also slaughter-houses); Secretary Public Hall Company (re refund of license); and from the Secretary Ladies’ Benevolent Society (re grant to Society)—were received and considered.
The Town Surveyor was requested to bring up a report at the next meeting relative to covering in the race in Fourth street.
It was resolved, on the motion of Cr. Cornfoot seconded by Cr. Campbell, that the Town Clerk reply to the letter from the Colonial Secretary “ re Arahura Road Board rates,” enclosing receipts in his possession from persons who have paid their rates to the Board, and also giving further information on the subject. The Mayor here took the chair and a long and most irregular discussion ensued relative to granting a refund of the license issued to the Public Hall Company, which eventually terminated in a resolution— £t That a reply be forwarded to the Public Hall Company, saying that no refund of the license could be granted.” Cr. Cornfoot here left the room.
The consideration of the letter from the Secretary of the Ladies’ Benovelent Society was postponed until the next meeting.
The report of the Public Works Committee was read and adopted, with the exception of clause 5, which was referred back to the Committee. Tenders for the construction of Main and Seddon streets were ordered to be called for, in accordance with the plana and specifications laid on the table. The Finance Committee’s Pieport was then considered and, as amended, adopted. Accounts to the amount of £IGS IDs fed were pissed lor payment. The Report of the Reserves Committee was read and adopted. The Town Clerk was authorized to act in bankrupt cases ? under the seal of the Board, in accordance with the Bankruptcy Act, 187 G. It was resolved that the amount due
to the Fire Brigade in October next should be paid, on an acceptance for that amount being endorsed at three months.
The Council then adjourned. '
