PER WAKATIPU, AT WELLINGTON. [press agency.] Sydney, Juy 20. Walker, the trance medium, who lately visited New Zealand is creating a favourable impression in Sydney. The Herald speaks of bis “ fluency of speech, command of words, excellent composition, of which he is master.” Four hundred and fifty pounds have been subscribed in Sydney towards Pearce, of (Loch Ard) fame as a testimonial. Melbourne, July 19. The New Guinea Colonization Society has taken steps to. obtain a charter from the Netherlands Indian Government to settle in New Guinea.
A nugget, weighing 187 ounces, has been found at Rokewood (Victoria). Sir Arthur Gordon, replying to a deputation from the Polynesia society in reference to their land claims at Fiji, said that while the British Government would not recognise them as having any legal rights, each claim would be investigated on its own merits, and, as matter of equity above, some might be entitled to recognition. Splendid coal has been found at Colac. The seam is 16 inches thick.
