KUMARA LITERARY INSTITUTE.
A general meeting of the Kumara Literary Institute was held last evening, at which there was a fair attendance. In the absence of the President and Vice-President the Rev E. A. Scott was voted to the chair.
The report of the Sub-Committee (Messrs Furby, Gordon, and Smart) appointed to draw up rules and regulations was brought up, and, with some slight alterations, adopted. After some discussion, a rule of importance was agreed to—“ That there shall be an annual subscription of £1 payable yearly, half-yearly, or quarterly (in advance), and that the receipt be issued from the first of the current month, but made to expire on the last day of March, June, September, and December, respectively,” This rule was found absolutely necesssary, iu order to facilitate accounts and the collection of subscriptions. The meeting then proceeded to elect additional Committee men as provided for in the rules. The Rev E. A. Scott was elected a Vice-President, and Messrs Janion and Rodgers Committee men. Messrs Jas. Wydle and A. R. Petrie were appointed Auditors for the ensuing year. The Treasurer read a balance-sheet to the 18th July, showing a balance in hand of £7 12s 2d, with outstanding liabilities of £2O ; and explained that when arrears of subscriptions were paid, there would be ample funds to meet ail liabilities An animated discussion followed on
the desirableness of forming a library, and the following resolution was carried :—“ That the Committee be instructed to take into their careful consideration the formation of a library in connection with the Institute.” The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chairman. The Committee for the present year are—President, M. Price, Esq., VicePresidents Mr Birch and Kev. E. A. Scott; Committee: Messrs Dale, Furby, Gordon, Janion, King, Mortimer, Rodgers, Smart, Thomas, and H. Wylde. It is earnestly hoped that members will lose no time in paying arrears of subscriptions and in taking new tickets, as it will be quite impossible for the Committee to decide on forming a library until it appears that theInstitute will meet with sufficient support to warrant them in so doing. New members can obtain tickets on applying to Messrs Furby, Dale, Smart, or Gordon; or from the librarian, Mr Burger. »
