Auckland, July 24. On Saturday evening, about nine o’ clock, all the outhouses, of Mr John Wallace, farmer, Flat Bush, were burned to the ground. Among these was a large shed 90 by 40, attached to which were stables, engine-house, tool-house, &c, A steam engine, threshing and reaping machine, a large quantity of oaten hay, seed oats, harness, ifec., were all destroyed. The wind was blowing strongly at the time, and the fire spread very rapidly. It appears to have been the work of an incendiary. There was no insurance, and the loss is about £ISOO.
Wellington, July 24. At the inquest on the bodies of William Hawkins and John M‘Qowan, drowned in the Rumahunga river, the evidence showed that the deceased and a man named Dougherty, had dinner at Mauriceville, and had five drinks each. When they started for Masterton M'Qowan was drunk, and when at the river, Dougherty ,M‘Gowan, and Hawkins, went in to ford it together, M‘ Go wan between the other, two, and when in the river, M'Gowan, fell, draging the others with him. Dougherty was pulled out senseless; the two others were drowned.
Ah aura, July 24. Charles Nygreens, an Australian by birth for whose apprehension a warrent was issued some months ago for staking Mrs Eliza Campbell, ?t Knmara, at Christmas, was traced and yesterday, arrested at Black Bull Reefs, in this district. The prisoner was taken to Greymouth. Mrs Campbell was dangerously wounded and even now suffers from the effects of the stab. LATEST UNPUBLISHED. Dunedin, July 25. The Office of the Public Works Department for the Middle Island is to be located at Dunedin. Wellington, July 25. Seats in the Legislative Council have been offered to and accepted by Patrick Alphonsus Buckley, solicitor, Wellington ; and Thomas Henderson, Auckland. A similar offer has also been made to James Dill worth, Auckland. It is understood Sir George Grey's health has much improved during the last few days. Auckland, July 25. The election for Waipa passed off quietly. The returns are as follow ;
