Further particulars regarding the murder at Oxford show that the deceased woman had excited her. husband’s jealousy by being too friendly with a man named Barrett, who lodged with them. Hoff complains of the infidelity of his wife, who was very notorious in the Oxford district. Barrett left the house early on the morning of the murder, but whether any quarrel occurred prior to it is not known. Hoff is about sixty years of age, and latterly has been much given to drink. The sale of the Linewood estate, 52 acres, one mile from Christchurch, took place yesterday. It was divided into quarter - acre sections, and realised <£18,432. Three years ago Mr Brittain, the present owner, purchased a large portion of the property at £49 per acre. Auckland, July 9. Mr L. O’Brien, an old and respected settler in the Cambridge district, committed suicide this morning, by taking strychnine. He had been rather strange in his manner for some time past. The allotment of Colonial Insurance Company’s shares here appeared to give general satisfaction. The Customs returns for the month at Port of Auckland were £16,374; for the quarter, £51,182. Invercargill, July IQ, To-day was observed as a public holiday on account of the opening of the Wintou-Kingston line. The town was I nearly deserted. | The nomination of candidates for the Invercargill election took place to-day. i J. D. Bain and H. The Wanaka with the San Francisco mail, which left here at 11 p.rn , on Monday for Port Chalmers, arrived back in harbor towed by the Ringarooma at 12.40 a.m., to-day. j When about 100 miles to the southi west of Lyttelton, at 2 a.m., yesterday, a very heavy head sea running, she ; lost the whole of the blades of her proi pellor. The wind being southerly and westerly, sail was made and the vessel ! headed back up the Coast. At 6.30 p.m., yesterday, when off Akaroa, the Ringarooma picked her, up and towed her in. The mails and passengers were transhipped into the Ringarooma which : sailed South at three o’clock this mornj ing. 'lhe Wanaka has not sustained : any further damage.
