Some prospectors who have returned from the Laloki River found several tine quartz specimens.
The party have not I'eached the spot where gold is said to exist. Cowlinshaw Brothers have laid on a steamer as a regular trader between Sydney and New Guinea.

BRITISH TROOPS EMBARKING FOR CYPRUS. London, July 9. The island of Cyprus is to remain as part of Turkey, the, surplus revenue being payable to the Sultan. Britain is to withdraw from the island-on the restoration by Russia to the Porte of Batoum, Kars, and Ardahan.
The Press generally warmly approves of these arrangements.
The Channel squadron has sailed for Cyprus.
The Horae Minister, in replying to a question in the House of Commons, said that in consequence of Russia retaining Baton m, a defensive treaty of alliance had been concluded between England and Turkey, and the Porte ceded Cyprus to England, who was to occupy it forthwith Major-General Sir Garnet J. Wolseley, G.C.M.G., has been appointed to administer affairs in the island.
Berlin, July 9. Prince Gortschakoff, has no objection to transfer Cyprus to England. A great part of the Continental Press are opposed to it.
London, July 10. Three regiments embark for Cyprus immediately. [special to press agency.] THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS V ORLEANS CLUB ELEVEN. THE BRITISH FLAG HOISTED IN CYPRUS. London, July 8. In a cricket match between the Australians and the Orleans Club eleven, the Australians made 171, and Orleans 132 runs in their first innings. July 9. The Australians scored 172 in their
second innings with the Orleans Club ; which had two out for 137. The result is a di'awn game. The Australians play Swansea tomorrow. The British flag has been hoisted at Cyprus. The Austrian, French, and Italian Governments approve of England’s tieaty with Turkey.
