It was subsequently found that the large body of smoke issuing from the cottage was caused
by the occupant, a female, who, on returning home at a small hour of the morning, indulged in the luxury of an enormous fire of pine tops, to the enjoyment of herself and the disgust of the parties who attended the supposed conflagration.
We notice that amonst the roads to be made—should the Government vote a special grant of £BOOO, as moved by Mr Dale in the Westland County Council yesterday, and carried—is the one from Dillman’s Town to the Christchurch road. This would be an inestimable benefit to this township, as the supplies for the Taipo and Christchurch road could be forwarded from here at far less expense than from Hokitika, in consequence of the distance in transit.
During the meeting of the County Council yesterday, it transpired, says the West Coast Times, that the amount of the debts of the Arahura Road Board are £1572 2s Id, and the assets £726. As the Chairman remarked, though the assets are shadowy, the debts are solid facts.
Mr Griramond, M.C.C., in reference to charitable aid, saj's “that in the case of the Kumara Hospital, as the Borough Council there declined to contribute, of course the County Council ought to refuse any assistance.” We may inform Mr Grimmond that his remarks are not in accordance with facts the Borough Council not having refused the subsidy as stated.
