A PROSPECTING ASSOCIATION FOR KUMARA.
After the public meeting held in the Theatre Royal, on Monday evening, to consider the Education Reserve question, His Worship the Mayor invited those present to remain for a few minutes as he had a matter of importance to bring under their notice. Mr Hamilton Cuming having been voted to the chair, Mr Scrddou said the question he desired to moot, and to see agitated to a successful issue, war the formation, of a Prospecting Association. He believed there was quite as much, if not more wealth on the Kumara Goldfield as on any other in the colony; but it required to be discovered, and the best w/iy was for the business people arid the miners to combine, and subscribe to-
wards the establishment of a Prospect ing Association. What was the good of the business people staying in Kumara if the miners went away ? The way to keep them here would be to form an association, and give the prospector’s employed, say, 25a weekly, letting them keep whatever gold they might find. In this way the value of the goldfield would be thoroughly tested. He hoped one and all would combine to carry out this object, and he would conclude by formally moving “ That in the opinion of this meeting it is highly desirable that a Prospecting Association should be formed in Kumara.”, Mr Barff M.H.R. seconded the motion, and it was carried by acclamation. Mr H. Cuming moved “ That a Committee, consisting of the following gentlemen, be formed, to canvas the district, and report to a public meeting to be held in a fortnight.—The Mayor* Messrs Dungan, Griffiths, Hanna, Pearu, and the mover.” Mr McGee seconded. Carried. The proceedings then terminated.
